The Far North District of New Zealand, as its name suggests, is the northernmost district within New Zealand, consisting of the northern tip of the North Island.
Geography
Consisting, unsurprisingly, of the northern part of the Northland region, of which it is the largest of three territorial authorities, the region stretches from the capes and bays at the northern tip of the Aupouri Peninsula past Ninety Mile Beach to the main body of the North Auckland Peninsula, where it encompasses both the Bay of Islands and Hokianga.
Population
The district includes the towns of Kaikohe and Kaitaia in the north, and the cluster of towns around and inland from the Bay of Islands (Kerikeri, Paihia, Russell, Opua, Kawakawa and Moerewa).
The district has 54,576 people (2001 census), of whom 44% are Maori. Over the last 10 years the district's population has defied national (and worldwide) trends by becoming increasingly rural. The largest town, Kaitaia, has a population of only a little over 5000. Kaikohe, the seat of the District Council, has a population of 4000.
