Farncombe, in Surrey, United Kingdom, is now effectively a suburb of the neighbouring town of Godalming. The village was mentioned in the Domesday Book, but few older buildings survive as evidence of its long history. Among the oldest is a row of almshouses, built in 1622.
Farncombe was the birthplace of John George Phillips (also known as Jack), chief wireless operator on the Titanic. He is said to have remained at his post, sending out a distress call, as the ship sank. Phillips is commemorated by the Phillips Memorial Garden, designed by Thackeray Turner and laid out by Gertrude Jekyll, in Godalming. There is also a memorial in St. John the Evangelist church, Farncombe.
