Feast of San Gennaro - Definition and Overview

The Feast of San Gennaro is an annual celebration of Italian culture and the Italian-American community in New York City. It has expanded over the years from a 1-day religious commemoration to an 11-day street festival in mid-September.

Centered on Mulberry Street in Little Italy, Manhattan, the festival generally features parades, street vendors, games, and a religious candlelight procession which begins immediately after a celebratory Mass at the Most Precious Blood Church.

San Gennaro (Saint Januarius) is the patron saint of Naples, Italy. His feast day is September 19 in the liturgical calendar of the Roman Catholic Church. The first Feast of San Gennaro was held by newly-arrived Neopolitan immigrants on September 18, 1926, who retained the customary observance from the old country.

Similar festivals have also been sponsored in other U.S. cities.
