Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) is the international governing body for the sport of volleyball. Its headquarters are located in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The FIVB was founded in Paris, France in 1947. As of 2001, it comprised a total of 218 affiliated federations.
The FIVB presides over five continental confederations:
- Confédération Africaine de Volleyball (CAVB)
- Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC)
- Confederation Européene de Volleyball (CEV)
- North, Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (NORCECA)
- Confederacion Sudamericana de Volleyball (CSV)
Each continental confederation, by its turn, presides over a number of national federations located in its domain of action.
Amongst others, the FIVB organizes the following international volleyball events:
The FIVB promotes the development of volleyball throught the world, and publishes the FIVB World Rankings, used as basis for the seeding of teams in international competitions. It also establishes competition formulae and implements the standardization of volleyball rules.
