Filter is an industrial rock band that gained some mainstream acceptance in the 1990s, along with similar artists like Garbage and Marilyn Manson. Richard Patrick, former guitarist for Nine Inch Nails during the Hate 1990 tours, and Brian Liesegang formed the band in 1993, releasing Short Bus in 1995. The album was a hit, but the band was not able to capitalize on their newfound fame and Liesegang left in 1997. Patrick continued on with Title of Record in 1999.

Filter's first mainstream hit, "Hey Man, Nice Shot", off the album Short Bus, was highly controversial, as it was seen as capitalizing on the public suicide of Budd Dwyer. This song was also widely rumored to be about the suicide of Kurt Cobain, which the band refutes. In 2002, the band released their third album, The Amalgamut.

Many regard Richard Patrick as having accomplished nothing after his performance in the Hate 1990 tours for Nine Inch Nails.
