Fiona Thompson - Definition and Overview

Fiona Thompson began studying cello in her native England at the age of seven. She honed her skills through a rigorous music education, including studies with Leonid Gorokhov at the Royal Northern College of Music in England, and with Ronald Leonard at the University of Southern California (USC). Ms. Thompson’s professional career blossomed after she graduated from USC, as her rich sound and distinctive musicality caught the attention of orchestras and chamber groups. Currently, Ms. Thompson is the principal cellist of the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra as well as Artist-in-Residence at Messiah College in PA. She is a member of the Baltimore Chamber Orchestra and has recently toured Japan with the Kennedy Center Opera. As the principal cellist of the Metropolitan Chamber Orchestra, she performed with Arlo Guthrie in Carnegie Hall, and Kennedy Center Concert Hall.

Her chamber music appearances include National Gallery of the Arts, Phillips Collection of Washington DC, Penn Alps Music Festival, Spoleto Music Festival in South Carolina. She is a member of the Mendelssohn Piano Trio, resident trio for Washington D.C.’s Embassy concert series and the Razumovsky String Quartet. The Washington Post has praised her “unfailingly handsome and fine-grained timbre”.
