Books of the Book of Mormon

The First Book of Nephi (pronounced nee-fie) is the first book of the Book of Mormon, considered in Mormonism to be a work of scripture. The full title of the book is The First Book of Nephi: His Reign and Ministry, and the book is also often referred to as "1 Nephi". It is purportedly a first-person narrative, beginning around 600 BC, of an ancient prophet named Nephi. The book of 2 Nephi is a continuation of this narrative.

Narrative

The book begins in Jerusalem under King Zedekiah where Nephi's father Lehi has a vision, which leads him to leave Jerusalem with his own family and a small group of others, and build a camp on the Red Sea in the desert. Eventually, the group builds a ship and sails to the New World. The First Book of Nephi describes these purported events, and as part of the narrative includes commentary on the Old Testament, as well as discussions about the Messiah, who is described by name as Jesus.
