The Flag of Azerbaijan consists of three equal horizontal bands of blue (top), red, and green; a crescent and eight-pointed star in white are centered in red band. The eight points of the star stand for the eight branches of the Turkic people. The blue band is the color of Turks, the green is for Islam and red is for progress. This flag was actually used in the late 1910s until Azerbaijan was annexed by the USSR.
