Civil ensign, ratio: 2:3

The Flag of Costa Rica was adopted on November 27, 1906. The first flag shown here is the state and war flag and ensign, that includes the coat of arms. The civil ensign (there is no civil flag) omits the coat of arms and is shorter. The blue colour stands for the sky, opportunities, idealism and perseverance. The white colour is for peace, wisdom and happiness. The red colour is for the blood spilt by martyrs for independence, warmth of the people and generosity. The stripes are in the ratio 1:1:2:1:1.
