The flag of Serbia and Montenegro was adopted on April 27, 1992, as the flag of Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

The current flag is a tricolor of red, white, and blue, and as such is very similar to a great number of flags around the world. The flags of the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France, among others, may be easily confused with the flag of Serbia and Montenegro.

A new flag was proposed by the Council of Ministers of Serbia and Montenegro in 2003 and is awaiting endorsement by the Parliament of Serbia and Montenegro. It will effectively be a superimposition of the two tricolors of Serbia and Montenegro, which are very similar but use two different shades of blue. The new flag will be a tricolor in which the middle blue bar is divided in two, the left-hand portion being the Serbian blue and the right-hand portion being the Montenegrin blue, called plavetna (or "blueish").
