Flaying is the removal of skin from the body. It is distinct from flagellation. According to tradition, Saint Bartholomew was flayed alive before being crucified. In Greek mythology, see the mytheme of the flaying of Marsyas by Apollo. Working on classical representations of Marsyas' skin hung upon a tree, Michelangelo portrayed his own flayed skin in the "Last Judgment" in the Sistine Chapel (illustration, left).
Example Usage of Flaying
anderjak: @warrenellis It was me. [not really. I just enjoy a good Flaying.]
SpaceyG: There's a huge City of Atlanta public works crew Flaying away across the street but I don't have the heart to turn my camera on 'em today.
ebrown2112: @jhummrich Because it would be quicker than Flaying my skin with a shrimp fork.
