Flip - Definition and Overview

Flip is a character in the comic strip Little Nemo. He is the son of the Sun, and the nephew of the Dawn, but he is something of a ne'er-do-well, and is more or less outcast. He spent his time in Slumberland (whose residents didn't want anything to do with him either), vying with Nemo for the Princess' attentions, unafraid to play dirty. Eventually he passed from nemesis to tolerated playmate to close friend of Nemo's and became one of the strip's livelier, more charming characters.

The word, Flip, may also be used as a derogatory term for people of Filipino descent. It was first coined by US troops during the Philippine-American war who referred to Filipino's as "Fucking Little Island People" (see Ethnic slurs).
