Florianturm - Definition and Overview

The Floriantower, shortly Florian, is the landmark of Dortmund.

The Floriantower is the TV tower of Dortmund and was built 1959 as attraction for a federal garden exhibition with a heght of 219.6 metres. At this tome it was shortly the highest freestanding structure in Germany.

The tower was constructed similiar as a high chimney of concrete. On a steel concrete tube, which reduces its diameter conically until a height of 129.75 metres there is in a level of 130.6 metres a building poart with two floors. In the lower floor there are operation rooms and the upper floor in 137.54 metres there is a rotating restaurant. In a height of 141.88 metres and 144.7 metres there are two observation decks.

Upper the observation deck there are installations and aerials of the German Telecom Inc. - since 1959 it is used for transmitting TV.

On September 7th, 2004 the exchange of the aerial was performed by a Russian helicopter in order to prepare the transmission of digital terrestrical TV. Since this day a transmitter with 50 kilowatts transmits a digital TV program for the area of Dortmund.

The Florianturm has since September 7th, 2004 a height of 210 metres.

From 1996 to 1998 the tower was renovated.

From 2000 to 2003 there was a device for bungee-jumping on the upper platform, which was closed in 2003 after a fatal accident.
