Florida death metal - Definition and Overview

Florida always has been the home of an active death metal scene. In particular, the Tampa area is noteworthy. Florida doom metal was most influential in the mid-80's to early 90's before thrash and metal music waned in popularity. The albums covers were often characterized by illegible band title fonts over various morbid pictures often supplemented by occult symbols at a 50-70% tint. New music is still being produced but what was once a flood is now a trickle. Super-saturation of the market likely played a major role in the downturn of the music's popularity.

The Sound

It's hard to classify the sound. Some of it was formed by pioneers like Obituary. Morrisound Studios also helped define it with releases of bands like Massacre. The vocals tended to be growling, grunting, or screaming with the lyrics often unintelligible. Some bands, like Nocturnus, even used heavy synthesizer effects in some of their releases. The production quality was often less than perfect, but fans of the genre worried more about an aggresive, brutal sound than things like production.
