Fontainebleau - Definition and Overview

Fontainebleau is a city and commune about 50 km south of Paris, France.

The city is a sous-préfecture of the Seine-et-Marne département.

It is a popular tourist spot on account of at least the following:

• The Royal Chateau Fontainebleau, where the Renaissance was introduced to France from 1528 onwards.
• The beautiful Fontainebleau forest a royal hunting park often visited by walkers and horse riders. The forest is also home to the best bouldering in the world, and is visited almost religiously by many of the world's climbers.
• The graves of G. I. Gurdjieff and Katherine Mansfield in the cemetery at Avon.

The European (and historical) campus of INSEAD business school is located in Fontainebleau.
