The Foras na Gaeilge is the governing body of the Irish language throughout all of Ireland. Specifically, they promote the language on the island (Irish is the official language of the Republic of Ireland and is also recognised as a regional language in Northern Ireland). The Foras na Gaeilge has existed since December 2, 1999. The Good Friday Agreement stipulated that a body be created to oversee the furtherance of the Irish language (as well as a body to oversee the furtherance of the Ulster Scots language) across the political divide between the Republic and Northern Ireland. The body also serves an advisory role in both the public and private sectors in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, advising in matters pertaining to the Irish Language. See also
