A foreign service more properly known as Diplomatic service is the body of diplomats and foreign policy officers maintained by a country. Also, neither term should be confused with "diplomatic corps"). In some countries, foreign services are contrasted with domestic services.
In the United States, the Foreign service personnel system is part of the Civil Service. Appointments in the Foreign service are Excepted service appointments.
