Fort Bend County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 354,452. Its county seat is Richmond6. Fort Bend is named for a blockhouse positioned in a bend of the Brazos River which was the center of life in the future county in early days. This county is part of the Houston Metropolitan Area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,295 km² (886 mi²). 2,265 km² (875 mi²) of it is land and 30 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.29% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 354,452 people, 110,915 households, and 93,057 families residing in the county. The population density is 156/km² (405/mi²). There are 115,991 housing units at an average density of 51/km² (133/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 56.96% White, 19.85% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 11.20% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 9.10% from other races, and 2.56% from two or more races. 21.12% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 110,915 households out of which 49.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.80% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.10% are non-families. 13.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.14 and the average family size is 3.46.

In the county, the population is spread out with 32.00% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 32.30% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 5.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 99.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $63,831, and the median income for a family is $69,781. Males have a median income of $47,979 versus $32,661 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,985. 7.10% of the population and 5.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.50% of those under the age of 18 and 9.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
