The Fort Tejon earthquake occurred on January 9, 1857, with an estimated magnitude of 7.9. It ruptured the San Andreas Fault for a length of 362 kilometers (225 miles), between Parkfield and San Bernardino. Displacement along the fault was 9 meters (30 feet). The epicenter of this earthquake is thought to have been located between Parkfield and Cholame.

Only two fatalities were recorded as a result of this earthquake.
