Fortrose - Definition and Overview

Fortrose is a burgh in the Scottish Highlands, located on the Moray Firth, approximately ten kilometres north east of Inverness. The town is known for its ruined cathedral, and as the home of the Brahan Seer. The burgh is also a popular location for spotting dolphins.

Fortrose is also a township on the southernmost coast of South Island New Zealand, named by one of the Scottish settlers in mid 1800s. It is at the mouth of Mataura River and was a useful port in the old days. Now reviving somewhat as 'The Gateway to the Catlins (http://www.catlins.org.nz)'
