In about 889 AD a ship carrying twenty Andalusian adventurers anchored in the Gulf of St. Tropez in Provence in the south of France. They began their attacks on the neighboring regions and invited others to join them. The Muslims called their base Fraxinet (in Arabic, Farakhshanit), after the local village of Fraxinetum.
The Muslim forces raided the surrounding area, reaching as far as Pedmont in Northern Italy and effectively controlling the Alpine passes between France and Italy. The Saracens were expelled from Fraxinetum in 975 AD by an alliance of local French rulers.
