A few projects to provide free software unicode fonts, i.e. fonts which are free software and designed to contain all Unicode glyphs exist. However there are also numerous project aimed at only providing a certain script, such as the Arabeyes arabic font.
GNU Unifont
The GNU Unifont is the bitmap-based font created by Roman Czyborra is the one present in most free operating systems and windowing systems such as Linux, XFree86 or the XOrg Foundation Open Source Public Implementation of X11. The development and maintenance of this font has been taken over by David Starner from the Debian project. The font is released under the GNU General Public License.

The Free UCS Outline Fonts
The Free UCS Outline Fonts ([2] (http://www.nongnu.org/freefont/)) is a font collection project. The aim of this project, started by Primo Peterlin, has been to collect fonts from numerous existing free fonts and join them in one package. The font collection has not been updated for several months as of early 2005, and the fonts have never been released as a package. The only way to obtain them is through the CVS interface found at their project page.
This project is independent of the Free Software Foundation but their font collection is very often erroneously referred to as "The Free Software Foundation Fonts".
