G4 was a cable television channel devoted to the world of video games and the people who play them. G4 launched in April 2002. It is headquartered in Los Angeles, California and is owned by Comcast. The network is scheduled to relaunch on February 15, 2005 as G4 - video game television, dropping the TechTV name less than a year after it had adopted it. Geared toward viewers aged 12-34, G4 was considered by some as the leading source of entertainment and information about everything game - from video to online to computer to wireless. The network was available in less than 15 million homes on Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Insight, Mediacom, Bright House Networks and RCN cable systems.
On March 25, 2004, G4 announced a merger with TechTV, creating a new channel called G4techTV. This merger caused high amounts of mixed sentiment among viewers of both channels, seeing the removal of several shows and the layoff of many employees.
G4 stands for the 4 generations of games: Text, Sprites, Poly, and Textures; and the 4 game platforms: PC, Console, Handheld, and Arcade.
