GNU Savannah - Definition and Overview

GNU Savannah is based on the same software as that used by VA Software to run their popular SourceForge portal.

However, as of version 3.0 of the sourceforge software, the software itself is no longer Free Software. It worried many users that they were involved in Free Software projects hosted on software that was not itself Free Software. Therefore, some people led by Loïc Dachary took version 2.0 of Sourceforge and forked it to create the Savannah project.

The Savannah project is now a Free Software hosting site similar to sourceforge.

savannah.gnu.org is a central point for development, distribution and maintenance of GNU Software.

savannah.nongnu.org is a central point for development, distribution and maintenance of Free Software.
