Claudius Marcellus is a member of the Claudian Family and a direct descendant of the consul Marcus Claudius Marcellus. He was the namesake of his father and his mother was Junia of Rome.
He was consul in 50bc. Marcellus tried in his role as consul to summon Julius Caesar, to justify his actions for the conquest of Gaul. After the conquests were completed, Marcellus called on him to resign from his position and let him be replaced. That never happened. Marcellus also proposed that Caesar should apply as a candidate in Political and Militry Positions in a standard and proper manner. Marcellus never received enough support for his proposals from senators, in regards to Julius Caesar. When the Civil War broke out Marcellus - unlike his brother and nephew - lay low and was pardoned by Caesar.
Marcellus married in an arranged ceremony Octavia Thurinia Minor, a great-niece of the Roman Dictator Julius Caesar and sister of Augustus. Marcellus was a man worthy of her. They had 3 children: Claudia Marcella Major (born 44bc), Claudia Marcella Minor (born 43bc) and Marcus Claudius Marcellus 42-23bc, Augustus' first heir. The daughters were born in Rome and their son was born in Baia Italy.
Marcellus became a supporter to Caesar's heir Octavius and the orator Cicero. He died in May 40bc. Five months later, his widow married Mark Antony.
The Roman General Publius Quinctilius Varus and his 2 sisters were grandchildren from his first marriage.
