Gangotri - Definition and Overview

Gangotri is a town in the state of Uttaranchal, India. The shrine at Gangotri is, together with Kedarnath, Badrinath and Yamunotri, part of the Char Dham, which are visited by thousands of pilgrims annually. Traditionally considered as the source of the Ganges (whose actual source is on the Gangotri Glacier), it houses a temple of the goddess Ganga.

Gangotri is also the name of a series of 3 mountain peaks around 6,600 m AMSL in the region between the Gangotri Glacier and the Khatling Glacier in Uttaranchal, India.
