Gatchina is the former seasonal residence of the Russian emperors in the vicinity of Saint Petersburg. It is also home to a small palace on the shore of the "Black Lake", which is known as "Priory Palace" or "Gatchina Palace". Constructed for the Russian Grand Priory of the Order of St John, it was presented to the Order by a decree of Paul I of Russia dated 23 August 1799. For more information on this Russian Imperial Order, see the Russian tradition of the Knights Hospitaller.
