George Grivas (greek: Γεώργιος Γρίβας, known in Cyprus as Digenis greek: Διγενής) was a Cyprus born Colonel in the Greek army. He was born in Trikomo that is now occupied by Turkish Troops. He created the "organisation X" to liberate Greece during German occupation. X took part and in the subsequent Hellenic Civil War with the legal Goverment of Greece.
He was in Cyprus in the 1950s as the leader of EOKA in Cyprus war of Independence against UK. After failing to unite Cyprus with other Greece, Cyprus become an Independent Republic. In 1963 Turkish Cypriots incited riots. Grivas came back to Cyprus in 1964 to become head of the greek contingent and greek cypriot armed forces.
In 1967 he had been ordered to attack on the turkish-cypriot village of Kofinou causing reactions from Turkey which lead to his resign. He went to Greece to come back to Cyprus secretly in the early seventies and lead EOKA B, trying to overthrow president Makarios III. He died early in 1974.
