Ghana Airways - Definition and Overview

Ghana Airways is an airline based in Accra, Ghana's Kotoka International Airport.

IATA Code: GH

Ghana Airways flies to North America, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. Ghana Airways uses DC-10 aircraft for their flights to London's Heathrow Airport. It uses the DC-9 airplane for domestic, and short inter-african, routes.

In the early 2000's, Ghana Airways chartered Airbus A330 aircraft from Canadian operator SkyService Airlines and MD-11 arcraft from USA operator World Airways to perform part of its North American operations. In late 2003, it suffered from DC-10 aircraft becoming unoperable due to maintenance obligations and as a result was forced to cancel a large segment of its long-range flights until it purchased two ex-Hawaiian Airlines DC-10 aircraft.

The airline is currently exploring a significant restructuring project.

As of 28 July 2004, Ghana Airways has been barred from flying to and from the United States due to safety concerns. On 13 August 2004, the board of Ghana Airways was sacked and tickets were stopped from being sold. [2] (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/3561480.stm)
