Ghanaian hip hop - Definition and Overview

Ghanian Hip-Hop is often called Hip-Life. Its a combination of Hip-Hop and Highlife, which is a popular type of jazz-like dance music.

Ghanaians were influenced by American and British rap, Reggae, and Highlife bands like the Ramblers and others. Hip-Life first started out in the early 1990s with a rapper named Reggie Rockstone. Later Ghanian rappers like Lord Kenya, Da Multy Crew, The Native Funk Lords, and other rap groups started the trend. Hip-Life is one of the modern trends of African music in Ghana.

Lyrics to popular Hip-Life songs are scarcely found on the internet. However, sites like www.ghanathink.org host a growing listing.
