In Hazel Heald's and Howard Philips Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos story Out Of The Aeons, Ghatanothoa was a Great Old One, first born son of Cthulhu. He was supposedly trapped beneath four-peaked Mount Yaddith-Go in Mu. He was said to have brought to Earth from the planet Yuggoth (Pluto) by the alien race known as the mi-go and was greatly feared, respected, and worshipped by the ancient Muvians because of his ability to turn all those that beheld him (Humans, that is) into living, thinking statuary. Many attempted, in vain, to defeat him, most notably T'yog, the High Priest of Shub-Niggurath, who tried to use a magic scroll given to him by the serpent god Yig and his own goddess to confront the dark god. The scroll was supposed to protect him from the petrifying effect of gazing upon Ghatanothoa. T'yog was defeated after Ghatanothoa's priests stole the scroll and replaced it with a fake one after failing to convince the Muvian people to dissuade him from doing so. While Ghatanothoa is widely regarded as a water elemental because he is Cthulhu's son he is also known by the title of Lord of the Volcanoes. T'yog's story was recounted in Dr. Friedrich Wilhelm von Juntz's grimoire Die Unsausprelichen Kulten or Nameless Cults (Robert E. Howard's answer to Lovecraft's Necronomicon). He is served by the alien reptilian race known as the lloigor. His siblings, in order of birth, are Ythogtha, Zoth-Ommog, and Cthylla.
