Gil (Final Fantasy) - Definition and Overview

In the Final Fantasy series, gil (Japanese ギル giru) is the name of the fictional currency used in the stories. The singular and plural forms of gil are the same. Gil can be used to buy items, weapons and other accessories at the many stores throughout the worlds of the Final Fantasy games. Gil is usually earned in battle, as in Final Fantasy X, however in some games, such as Final Fantasy VIII, Gil is earned by different methods. Often the player can try their luck at a game, or at a casino as in Final Fantasy VII, and gamble their Gil in the hope of earning more.

In English language localizations before Final Fantasy VII, gil were called GP, presumably meaning "gold pieces" or "gold points".

In Final Fantasy VI, the ability Coin Toss gave a visual representation of what a Gil coin looked like, which is basically a circular gold piece with a hole in the center and markings around it. This makes it visually similar to other currencies (most notably that of Japan, because it has the shade of a 5 or 50 Yen piece).
