 Giovanni Pisano - Definition

Giovanni Pisano (c. 1250-1314) was an Italian sculptor, as was his father Nicola Pisano. His work shows a mixture of French Gothic and the classical style.

Among his works are:

  • Pulpit for the cathedral in Siena (1265-68)
  • Sculptures and architectural design for the facade of the cathedral in Siena (c.1285)
  • Pulpit for the church of S. Andrea in Pistoia (1301). The five reliefs on the pulpit are the Annunciation and Nativity; the Adoration, Dream of the Magi and Angel warning Joseph; the Massacre of the Innocents; the Crucifixion; and the Last Judgement.
  • Pulpit for the Pisa Cathedral (1302-11)

Giorgio Vasari included a biography of Pisano in his Lives.
