Girdwood, Alaska - Definition and Overview

Girdwood, Alaska is a small ski town 38 miles southeast of Anchorage, Alaska.

The previous name of the city was Glacier City; it was founded by gold miners with the abundant deposit located in its mountains and streams. The current name of Girdwood was inherited from a different town of the same name that existed on the nearby coast before it was destroyed by the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake. After the quake, the survivors moved the town inland to the Glacier City site.

Girdwood lies in a valley located in the Chugach Mountains surounded by seven permanent glaciers. It's also a really fun place to live. In the summer there is a lot of hiking, fishing and rafting. In the winter there's the epic world class skiing and snowboarding.
