Girlfriends is a UPN television network sitcom centering around the lives of four African American women living in Los Angeles, California. The show debuted September 2000. The show stars Tracee Ellis Ross as attorney Joan Clayton, Golden Brooks as Maya Wilkes, Jill Marie Jones as real estate broker Toni Childs, and Persia White as Lynn Searcy.
The show, which is produced by Kelsey Grammer, centers around four women who endure the trials and tribulations associated with being independent women in search of a permanent relationship. Often called, "the black Sex and the City", the show differs from the HBO series in that Girlfriends tends to airs episodes more inclined to present issues faced are more commonly by African Americans. Moreover, the series features a male in a starring role (Reginald C. Hayes).
