Goddard Space Flight Center - Definition and Overview

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, located in Greenbelt, Maryland, is a major space science laboratory. It was named in memory of Robert Goddard, the father of modern rocket propulsion, and was established on May 1, 1959.

The Goddard Institute of Space Studies (http://www.giss.nasa.gov/) is a division of the Goddard Space Flight Center's Earth Sciences Directorate, established in May 1961 by Dr. Robert Jastrow to do basic research in space sciences in support of Goddard programs. It is located at the northeast corner of W. 112th Street and Broadway in New York, close to the campus of Columbia University. One notable feature of the building is that the exterior of the corner restaurant, "Tom's", was regularly seen in the comedy series Seinfeld as the diner which Jerry Seinfeld and his friends frequented.
