Golcar Golcar

Golcar - Definition

Golcar is a hill town in the Colne Valley in West Yorkshire, England, 4 km west of Huddersfield, and just north of the River Colne and the Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

Golcar is a relatively small village (population 17,000 in 2001) but has a long history. It was named after St Guthlac who preached in the area in the 8th century. It appears in the Domesday book as Goullakarres.

In the Industrial Revolution, Golcar became an important centre for weaving, and an old weaver's cottage has been turned into the Colne Valley Museum. The exhibits include a handloom and a Spinning Jenny, invented by James Hargreaves.
