Golf Carts are small vehicles designed originally to carry two golfers and their golf clubs around golf courses faster and with less effort than walking.
Golf Carts now come in a wide range of formats but are still primarily used to convey small numbers of passengers short distances at relatively slow speeds.
The unique contribution of golf carts to modern transportation is that they represent the first mass-produced consumer use of electrically-powered transportation. While some golf carts do come with small gas engines the majority are electrically powered and this variety are now used in many communities where their lack of emissions, lack of noise, and safety (slow speeds) are prized attributes. When purpose-bullt for general transportation these are called Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs).
