Gomphothere - Definition and Overview

Gomphothere is a name given to a dirverse group of extinct elephant-like animals, proboscideans). They differed from elephants in their tooth structure, particularly chewing surfaces on the molar teeth.

They appeared in the Miocene and Pliocene epochs, 12-1.6 million years ago.
