Goran Ivanisevic - Definition and Overview

The title given to this article is incorrect due to technical limitations. The correct title is Goran Ivanišević.

Goran Ivanišević (born September 13, 1971) is a Croatian tennis player. Ivanišević was born in the port city of Split. He has had many successful tennis tournament performances, including a victory at Wimbledon in 2001. Incidentally he was a wildcard entry to Wimbledon that year and became the first ever wildcard entry to win the prized trophy.

He first made his mark in the world of tennis at Wimbledon in 1990, when he reached the semi-finals aged 18. Two years later, he reached the Wimbledon final itself, with wins over Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and Pete Sampras, before losing a very close five set match to Andre Agassi. Goran would go on to reach three more Wimbledon finals, and finally won the title in 2001, beating Patrick Rafter in a thrilling five set victory on Centre Court.

In Barcelona he won the first Olympic medal for his newly independent country of Croatia. His ribbon promoted the checkerboard pattern of the Croatian coat of arms.

During his career, Goran won 22 ATP Tour singles titles across all four surfaces: grass, hard, carpet and clay; and he also holds the ATP Tour record for most aces served in a year (1477 in the 1996 season). In 1996 he and Iva Majoli won the Hopman Cup, a mixed team tennis event held at the start of every year in Australia.

Ivanišević temporarily retired in 2001 due to shoulder surgery, but remained listed at the bottom of the ATP's ranklist. He returned to tennis in 2004, but retired permanently after the 2004 Wimbledon. His last match was a third-round loss to Lleyton Hewitt on June 25, 2004. After the match, he again prominently displayed his Croatian heritage, this time by putting on a Croatia national football team strip (jersey).

2001 saw Goran win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Overseas Personality Award.
