Gorodets (Городец in Russian) is a town in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in Russia. It is located on the left bank of the Volga River 53 km north of Nizhny Novgorod. Population: 34,000 (1970). Gorodets is one of the oldest settlements on the Volga, founded in the second half of the 12th century (1152 or 1172, according to some accounts). In 1239, the town was burnt to the ground by the Batu Khan's army. In 1263, Alexander Nevsky died in Gorodets on his way back to Novgorod from the Golden Horde. Gorodets is famous for its decorative handicrafts, such as wood carving and painting.
