- From 1972 to 1978 it was awarded as Best Jazz Performance by a Group
- From 1979 to 1992 it was awarded as Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Group
- From 1993 to 2000 it was awarded as Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group
- Since 2001 it has been awarded as Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group
