Granger is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 577.

The Town of Granger was incorporated in 1838. The town lies on the county's northern border.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 83.0 km² (32.0 mi²). 82.9 km² (32.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.

The Genesee River forms part of the western border of the town.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 577 people, 215 households, and 159 families residing in the town. The population density is 7.0/km² (18.0/mi²). There are 357 housing units at an average density of 4.3/km² (11.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.19% White, 0.52% African American, 2.60% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 215 households out of which 30.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.8% are married couples living together, 6.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.0% are non-families. 22.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.04.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 112.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 117.0 males.
