Granules are caused by convection currents of gas. The rising part of the granules is located in the center were the gases are hot. The outer edge of the granules is dark due to the cooler gases that are dropping. We were able to recognize this through Doppler shifts. The grainy appearance of the surface of the Sun is called granulation. |
