Greater Cleveland - Definition

Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio are nicknames for the metropolitan area surrounding Cleveland in Ohio.

According to the 2000 census, the eight-county Consolidated Metropolitan Statistical Area (CMSA) has a population of 2,945,831, making it the sixteenth largest metropolitan area in the United States. The CMSA is made up of two Primary Metropolitan Statistical Areas (PMSAs): the six-county Cleveland-Lorain PMSA and the two-county Akron PMSA.

The U.S. Census Bureau defines the Cleveland-Lorain PMSA as consisting of all of the following six counties: Ashtabula County, Cuyahoga County, Geauga County, Lake County, Lorain County, Medina County.

The Akron PMSA consists of all of the following two counties: Portage County, Summit County.

However, the areas commonly understood as Greater Cleveland or Northeast Ohio are not precisely defined. Most often, Greater Cleveland is understood as referring to all of Cuyahaga County, and sometimes a few other immediately adjacent communities.

Northeast Ohio is commonly understood as being a larger, more inclusive area than Greater Cleveland, consisting of portions of all the eight counties in the CMSA, and at times including other communities such as Canton, Massillon, Alliance, and even Sandusky, Youngstown, and Warren.

So to be clear: the areas commonly referred to as Greater Cleveland or Northeast Ohio is NOT precisely the same as the Cleveland-Akron CMSA defined by the U.S. Census.
