Greater Victoria, British Columbia - Definition and Overview

Greater Victoria (also known as the Greater Victoria Region) is located in British Columbia, Canada, on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. It is not a political entity but rather a group of thirteen different municipalities, which together form the core of the Capital Regional District.

These are broken down into:

  • The four "core" munipalities: the City of Victoria and the District Municipalities of Saanich, Esquimalt, and Oak Bay;
  • The Western Communities, which comprise the Town of View Royal and the District Municipalities of Colwood, Langford, Metchosin, and Sooke; and
  • To the north of Victoria, up the Saanich Peninsula, are the District Municiaplities of Central Saanich (home to the Butchart Gardens), North Saanich, and Highlands and the Town of Sidney.
