Gross National Income (GNI) was used to as gross national product (GNP), even though it was a measure of income rather than output (or production). The term gross national product is no longer used within the official explanation of economic accounts. GNI is a measure of the income to a country (e.g. UK) from production wherever in the world it occurs. For example, if a British-owned company operating in another country sends some of their incomes (profits) back to the UK this adds to the UK’s GNI. Similarly, a British production of an American company sending profit to America will reduce the UK’s GNI.
