Guards is an honorific title given to Red Army (Soviet Army) and Red Navy units who performed heroically during the Great Patriotic War (World War II). Units thus honored were presented the Guards Red Banner with all personnel receiving enamaled Guards Badges. They then received superior and/or more weapons and training to make them even more effective.
