A guernsey is an upper garment similar to a jersey, differing in that it is thicker and more likely to be hand knitted, or have such an appearamce in contrast to the latter's finer knit.
Guernseys were first widely used in the rating uniform of the Brirish Royal Navy in the nineteenth century, and in similar fashion to a Jersey would have undoubtedly been named for the Channel Island of the same name.
