A Gun range is a category of Shooting range (or Target range) that is a specially designed facility providing opportunities for shooting enthusiasts to fire at targets with firearms as an exercise in marksmanship.
In the general case, shooters position themselves at a station or lane with a stationary target downrange. Gun ranges provide a variety of targets, and controls to allow the shooter to position the target at various distances. The target can then be retrieved and examined to assess how well the shooter hit the target.
Many variations are possible however:
- Shotguns can be used to shoot skeet or trap, both of which use fast moving clay targets that help bird hunters improve their marksmanship.
- Rifle shooters typically use lanes that are 100-300 yards (90-270 meters) in length or more. Hunters in particular use gun ranges to help calibrate ("site in") their weapons and any scopes they may use.
- Those using handguns, whether semi-automatic pistols or revolvers, typically practice with stationary targets positioned 7-75 feet (2-30 meters). This shorter distance permits many gun range owners to site their facility indoors, whether public ranges or those used by metropolitan police departments for qualification and training.
